From a technical standpoint, it doesn't make sense for SUN/Cobalt to use AMD products at this point in time. From an alliance standpoint, it does. Keeping AMD processor active in the server world has very little downside for SUN (in low volume at the very low-end cheap).

For Intel, this is a good, inevitable break into SUNs world. things will only keep improving in the server space as they move up the server food chain. I do wonder if Intels relationship with the Compaqs, Dells, IBMs, HPs would be adversely affected as a result of this deal. But, as this point in time, there aren't too many options for them.

BTW, any idea, if/when SUN will make an official announcement about these cobalt servers ?
