Lets be very clear. CSCO is PMCS's biggest customer. One could interpret that Cisco has simply stopped ordering. The PMCS call is one of the worst disaster i can recall. I am going through my brain trying to recall something this bad, maybe the blow-up on US Robotics?

PMCS's top customer is CSCO whose largest markets are enterprise and CLEC. JDSU's end markets are primarily carriers. As they move into the metro market, their customer base will extend more and more to Ciena, Marconi, Siemens, ONI, Avanex, and Cisco.

If you want an indicator of stength in high-end fiber optics systems, look at AMCC, a company with a strong position in OC-192. VTSS is also a reliable guide because of its strong position in Galium Arsenide products.

As far as Cisco goes, you might want to dig below the surface and find out how much market share Unisphere Solutions is taking away. Juniper is not the only one eating into their market.

Pat, Thanks for providing that information. VTSS and AMCC had been positive in their conference calls. I was wondering if either of these actually competed with PMCS. VTSS's top customer is Cisco now--if was Lucent last quarter. They probably serve a different part of Cisco's business. I was wondering if there was any connection ..that is, VTSS taking market share. It also explains why NT was not as cautious as one would have expected in this environment. Maybe GLW's caution on unpredictable orders could be related the possible JDSU/NT deal that might be in the works.

It is becoming apparent that we are looking at two different markets--enterprise and carrier. It also seems that Cisco itself has different products and as Chambers pointed, a slowdown in one area may not hit the company as a whole---unlike Nortel which would be in trouble in the event of an optical slowdown. Chambers talked about this after NT blowup last fall.

You may also be right about Cisco losing market share and that may have the biggest impact on PMCS.

BTW--I guess it will be a buying opportunity in VTSS, AMCC tomorrow, as these are down big on the PMCS news.

Why do you say CIsco is more CLEC focused than carrier? I think about 40% of Cisco's revenues come from telecom service providers (as opposed to enterprises), with a large chunk of that being the high end routers. Of that 40%, what do you think the split is between CLEC and the larger RBOC/IXC carriers?

Thanks
