Mindready Solutions Inc., a leading supplier of test engineering and real-time communications solutions for the telecommunications, aerospace and multimedia industries today announced the launch of a new intelligent IEEE-1394 stand-alone I/O module (SD-IO-400) - a small footprint, micro-controller module. SD-IO-400 is used for communication between a 1394 bus and another communication port such as a serial port, a parallel port, an A/D converter or a digital provider such as an image sensor or a data acquisition device. The new module now bundles both hardware and software to provide high-level 1394 functionalities in a low-cost, plug-and play package. It enables OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) to add enhanced 1394 functionalities and micro-controller support to new products without having to write additional software, reducing time-to-market, engineering costs and development risks. Mindready's SD-IO-400 module also provides OEM integrators with greater flexibility in choosing the level of 1394 integration most suited to their application development needs: - The module can be used as a complete hardware/software solution that is integrated with a customer's application as a daughter board (piggyback). A two connector set-developed by Mindready, provides the interface between the SD-IO-400 board and the customer's solution. As a complete solution, integrators do not need to write specific software for the SD-IO-400 board. A host computer using 1394 can remotely control the unit. - The SD-IO-400 can be used as a software solution if Mindready hardware is not required. The module's 1394 communication firmware is a small 1394 micro-stack running on a processor without any operating system, bringing 1394 functionalities to any microprocessor. The 1394 micro-stack source code can be purchased separately to ease portability to other processor architecture. Used as a software solution only, SD-IO-400 reduces the development cycle by enabling integrators to develop software on Mindready's platform without having to wait for the final hardware. Once the hardware is available, the application and micro-stack can then be easily ported onto the configuration. - Mindready's SD-IO-400 can also be used as an embedded solution. Integrators can port their value-added code onto Mindready's module in order to create a new customized solution. "The greatest advantage of the SD-IO-400 rests in its ability to fulfill all the needs of the embedded 1394 communication design; easy to integrate on any new design, this stand-alone module represents a turnkey solution for 1394 integrators" said Christophe Brayet, Vice President, General Manager, Real-Time Solutions at Mindready. The SD-IO-400 module can be used in a wide variety of applications including imagery (image acquisition), printing, industrial control, defense, aeronautics telecommunications, and embedded computer systems.
