Ted,

The Czech spelling would be Josef.

I have seen the movie (Unbearable lightness of being) some time ago (and read most of the book) but it was some time ago, and I don't remember the shots of Prague from that movie. The city has changed a lot. It's kind of like after 45 years of minimum to no maintenance, the whole city (at least the historical parts) have been washed, painted and renovated. It doesn't look grey anymore. It actually looks very cheerful.

One time, when I went there, it was only a short time after the "Velvet revolution", probablyin 1990 or 91, the city has basically still operated under the old rules. As I entered the valley where Prague is located, I kind of entered into a mixture of fog and smoke that basically never changed for the entire 3 days I was there. I don't know if it was a coincidence, or the normal state of things. I guess it had probably something to do with the low grade coal they were burning there for heating. The ironic thing is that the fog and the greyness made the city look so much more mysterious and beautiful.

Anyway, I didn't notice the fog or the smoke in the last couple of years, so they must have made some changes.

Joe
