why has neither side as yet been able to put aside the sniping.

This is something individuals have to ask themselves; I don't like to think of it as a question of "sides". I have nothing against sniping, as long as we snipe at each other's positions.

I also don't think anybody loses or wins, in the election or on the thread. The venues for the fights change. Balances shift. Sometimes whoever is nicer wins, sometimes not. Me, I figure if I make someone think, I won.

As I've said before, I wish everybody would bear in mind that there two things are always possible in a political discussion.

You might be wrong.
The other guy might have a legitimate point.

If those two possibilities were considered more often, political discourse at every level might be elevated a good deal.

It's also good to remember that the ad hominem attack is actually a surrender. People resort to it when they can cite no facts and logic to support their position.
