Just my views looking forward, but I'm waiting to take long term positions. I think it will be a while before that day comes.

Sounds to me like you would do well to consider exactly how much downside you are willing to tolerate with longer-term investments. Then from there, you might move on to develop exit rules if this seems indicated based upon your style and tolerance. Or, for large positions, perhaps consider other methods of managing downside risk, for example selling puts against those positions you feel most confident of, or buying puts outright for those positions in technical downtrend.

No matter what exit strategy you have, I think it pays to carefully consider under what conditions you might sell. Some people are willing to just hang on almost no matter what...... to each his own, I suppose. I have some long term stuff that I completely ignore, but I also seem to have less tolerance for dead money these days.
