We hear about CJD mostly because we're now able to test for it. It's not a new disease, and remains rare. You find what you look for. (And it helps if there's money involved in promoting CJD/BSE hysteria.)

i'm practically certain the disease has spread all over the world by now. it's only that outside of the EU, NOBODY is testing cattle for BSE. we'll have to wait for the first actual cases to put in an appearance, but it WILL happen, just as AIDS eventually spread all over the world.

Just to put variant Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (the prion disease which humans get from eating infected meat) into perspective:

Number of US residents who die from gastric bleeding caused by aspirin, ibuprofen, and other over the counter pain relievers every year - approximately 20,000.

Number of US residents infected with variant Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease - zero. Ever.
