John - hotmail was developed on solaris, using a traditional Sun architecture in hardware, software and applications - "soup to nuts" as you say. Little change was made to the system after MS bought them although there have been some discussions about moving hotmail to the MS stack for obvious reasons. I think that this says a lot more about Sun than about MSFT - hotmail is really just another Sun site that happens to be owned by MS. Their problems are a lot more like eBay than any MS site.
