Actually, there is some parallel between AIDs and Mad Cow Disease, but not the one you are making - I remember back when AIDS first became known, people were afraid to have anything to do Haitians, homosexuals, or hemophiliacs, the "Three H's." I had a couple of patients who were HIV positive, one with full-blown AIDS, and the receptionist would disinfect the furniture with Lysol whenever I met with them in the conference room. She even threw away a china coffee mug that one of them drank from!

Wait for the unusual spike in early onset Alzheimer's diagnoses...that should be a clue. In 1995 or '96 (?) my secretary's mother died of Alzheimer's...so they said. One day she seemed fine. The next day she took a walk in her nightgown in the middle of winter. Within weeks she was falling down and couldn't walk. She was ranting and raving at one point and couldn't recognize anyone in the family. Then it seemed like a few weeks later she was suddenly dead. The onset of "illness" to death was only perhaps 2-3 mos? She was the right age for CJD 60+ (but not by much.) Given that fact, I doubt it was vCJD. But no way was that poor woman's illness Alzheimer's. Even her family was suspicious of the diagnosis.
