Tim,

Your point was apparently that it doesn't matter how evil the regime is the president should not joke about bombing them.

My point was is that here is the president one of the most powerful nations in the world joking about bombing another nation where the lives of thousands, if not millions, of people would be killed. What part of that is funny?

Furthermore, I question his intent for making the joke or comment. He knew that everyone who was listening knew he had the capability to do what was the basis for the joke. Was he just stupid, or maybe pressing a point?

(although it was meant to be private he was carelous about talking in front of an open mike that day).

It was not by chance the mike was on.

Would you find it amusing if a doctor followed his prognosis that you have a benign tumor on your leg with the joke that it [your leg] has to come off?

I would not find it amusing but I would have the strong negative reaction that some people had to the Reagan joke. (That assumes I knew it was a joke from the begining. If I thought he was serious for a second, I would be quite annoyed at the joke.)

Once again I think we disagree on what's appropriate. And once again, maybe my standards are too high.
