re:To invest early in the summer, you must embrace an investment theory that posits that network effects achieve a lock-in when they reach critical mass. It is to believe that indirect network effects based on pre-integrated compatibility in hardware and software produced a needed solution that already has created strong competitive advantages, so strong that they ensure that subsequent direct network effects are highly probable if not inevitable.

Thank you for your substantial effort Don. As you know I am an "early" Wind investor---though not as early as you. I believe it is inevitable that Wind will be ordained a gorilla. Thanks for bringing the Wind thread's lily pond spreadsheet over here. I have been really impressed with Alan, Peter's and others work on this project. Here is the spreadsheet again for those of you who didn't pick it out of Don's posts.

Best, Huey

Don:

I reviewed your Project Network Series on Wind River Systems, and found it to be thorough, and thought-provoking.
I know that it required a tremendous effort to distill what you know about WIND and about Networking into your series.

Thank you for your time and contributions on this.

While Don's series is long, for those without a lot of time, I would recommend you at least read the Summaries from posts 38486 and 38489.

...if you find any of this useful, please let me know by PM. ...I begin to believe and fear that I am merely amusing myself with these long posts and annoying everyone else...(from 38497)

I think it is true that reading your incredible effort, which consumed 9 posts, is daunting for many, especially those of us with Day jobs. But I hope you don't think that people are irritated or unappreciative. Contributing in the selfless way that you have is exactly what this thread is about, as so nicely noted by William.

There may be a few curmudgeons about who will poke some fun, but we're all fair game for that, right? <g>

If we could somehow mix Dr. Id's concision, which you lack, with your intellectual content and substance of your posts, which his posts lack, we'd have a helluva combo. <VBG>

Apollo

Tornado watch for WIND - Here's a tool

Regarding watching & waiting for WIND to develop his first Tornado, it occurred to me that a good place to start would be to devote a block of time to learning who the WindLink for Tornado partners are and then then following up with a visit to their websites and each of their respective 'News' sections.

Before I started, I found that the current WRS' TradeWinds Directory includes more than 350 partners and the products listings had increased to "more than 400 listings this year, an increase of more than 25 percent over last year's directory."

wrs.com

As I moved through the Directory with my non-technical background, I knew I was not understanding most of what I was reading, but persevered nonetheless :)

That said, I came away from this exercise with a positive sense of how serious and diversified WRS' business is. For instance Intel, with its cash acquisitions ($540 million) of Trillium & Ziatech last Summer, and subsequent investment in Zayante, is well represented and appears to be entering the IP phone market which Cisco and 3Com are "attempting to ignite".

news.cnet.com

I also noticed that STMicroelectronics had been doing business with several of the partners, and Espial had been doing well. I was pleased to see RSA Security with several (4) Cryptographic and Security Components. And I was pleasantly surprised to see how geographically diversified these folks are ... Germany, the UK and especially India were well represented ... and it was the first time I saw how connected WRS is with the military & aerospace market.

The TradeWinds website is very easy to navigate around in if you know who/what you are looking for. But that format is not handy for a shareholder such as myself who is trying to get a general sense of the total picture. So as I went along I created a simple listing of their names and respective URLs. Where I noticed merger activity I noted that and in the interest of sharing with other thread members and encouraging them to see what meaning they can extract, I have posted my URL-list below.
