"IBM is betting that Napster in its current form will ultimately go away, making its limited-distribution model more attractive. "

It is this statement that is entirely asinine.
There is no way that free P2P networks are going to be replaced by pay ones.
They will co-exist. Because the pay networks will be faster and more reliable.

A wise man once said:
Cheap, fast, reliable... Pick two and we can talk.

I use both Gnutela and Napster.

I guarantee you that the model is here to stay. And the (open and free) gnutella networks are evolving. They are changing to a slightly less idealistic view about P2P networking. Now there are "reflector servers" up that make searches more efficient like Napster's are.

The mass of people do not understand exactly what Napster and Gnutella are, but only vaguely know what they do. This is why (I guess) IBM, and others, think that the FUD in the above statement will work.

It won't.

As I have said before. The people that make money off the distribution of "content" have to start thinking now about how to change their game. Sometimes I wonder why I don't try to figure out a solution to this problem.. I could be pretty rich if I did.

Someone is gonna do it. I havent seen it yet. mp3.com comes close.
