carolyn,

there is a registry tweak for getting rid of the volume control in the system tray. maybe the person who worked on your pc decided to get rid of it for you. i could search around for that tweak, but since i've never wanted to use it, i haven't filed it anyplace special. maybe someone else knows.

here's another idea.

using file search (start\find\files&folders), type in volume control hit find now.

if you see a file named just 'volume control' (probably with a little icon next to it that looks like a light switch), double click on it to open it. it should present you with a master control of about seven assorted volume adjustments. peruse these to confirm that 'mute' is not checked, and to see if volume levels are okay.

let us know.

:)
