That one definitely cuts both ways. I can't count the number of types I've been branded a raving demolib Klintonista for espousing essentially libertarian positions.

Just the other day I was accused of being a Democrat, though I have never in my life considered joining any political party.

I'm beginning to think that assumptions are at the root of a lot of our problems here. PROLIFE and I traded apparent misunderstandings the other day. Yesterday I posted to him an explanation of why his post triggered my response. I'm now thinking that my explanation failed to take into account what may have been an assumption on his part.

He started a post to me with "that just sounds like sour grapes to me." I took that to mean sour grapes about religion, which is what we were discussing. Upon further reflection and having seen that phrase applied to those who might be bitter about Gore's loss, the light bulb finally came on--he may have assumed I was a Gore supporter. That would certainly help explain his response. Anyone who has been following this thread and who looks at people as individuals would know that I'm not a Democrat, a liberal, or a Gore supporter. I've certainly been noisy enough about it, especially considering that Poet has been gracious enough to encourage me to post on LWP.

I think if we would just be more careful about assumptions we'd eliminate a lot of the misunderstandings.

Good post! Should be required reading. Here's the most important part:
As I've said before, the whole idea of attacking, generalizing about, or attempting to argue with "liberals" or "conservatives" as a group is pretty futile, since no consensus definition exists for either term, and many people who hold liberal opinions on one issue hold conservative opinions on others. Discussing issues is a good deal more rewarding and a great deal less likely to offend than attacking either individuals or undefined groups.

I can't count the number of types I've been branded a raving demolib Klintonista for espousing essentially libertarian positions.
You're definitely not a raving anything. Except maybe raving reasonable.

In some circles on SI, failure to worship at the shrine of St. Ronnie is considered presumptive evidence of being at least a tree-hugging liberal, more likely an outright socialist.
More like a sign of sanity. Ronnie's pushing of Star Wars and his defense build-up did cause the collapse od the Soviet Union. But that appears to have been an accidental, unforeseen side effect rather than an intended outcome. The US spy agencies did not see it coming and were surprised by it.
