The current AMD/INTC competition compares with the initial years in which "foreign built" automobiles made their appearance on this continent. It took a little time before the consumer came to the realization that price/performance advantages offered by some "foreign" vehicles could no longer be ignored in the purchase decision process. Given that AMD is not a foreign company, the "misperception" should be even shorter-lived. I have also noticed a not-so-subtle shift taking place over the past year, as your discussion comparing price/performance between INTC/AMD products at the top end could not have taken place then. Now there is not only teeth to any discussion around AMD/INTC product comparison, but rationally, AMD comes out the winner based upon comparables. The current INTC/Dell alliance, although real and formidable, lacks price/performance substance any longer and, imho, and unless INTC pulls a rabbit out of the hat (P3 on its last legs and P4 not exactly a barn burner by any measure) cannot be sustained much longer. A year from now when AMD is competing (maybe very successfully) in the mobile, server and workstation spaces, a shift in favourable AMD perception, greater in magnitude than what we've seen occur the past year should unravel, and purchase decisions, the likes of which you have presented, could, after such a perceptual shigft has taken place, almost be claimed irresponsible, particualrly in a corporate environment and especially if bought with taxpayer money. (I would make the claim now that any "public" (i.e. funded by the taxpayer) body purchasing a P4, given the "usurious?" price/performance gap between the P4 and comparably/better performing products offered by the competition is wholly irresponsible!!!)
