Demonstrated, no. I can understand that it COULD have a deterrent role, rationally. At least a thought: "If I kill this person, I could die." It's plausible, but not scientific. How on Earth would one conduct such a study in an ethical way?

I also just plain viscerally don't like being on that list of death penalty countries. I look at the two lists and just feel in my stomach, oh, yecchhhh, I wanna move over there.

The "company you keep" argument.


I find this an enormously compelling argument. I don't see how anyone could just dismiss it.
