This is similar to what bosquedog suggested.

MY VOLUME CONTROL, THE SPEAKER ICON LOCATED IN THE SYSTEM TRAY, IS MISSING. I CAN'T CONTROL MY VOLUME. WHAT CAN I DO TO GET IT BACK?
To bring back volume icon for Windows 98 select the following application:

Start>Programs>Accessories>Entertainment>Sound Recorder

Then from the menu options select Edit/Audio Properties. Put a check in the box beside show volume control in the taskbar.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

You see, nothing on the PC is intuitive, as it is on the Mac. So I am having trouble. I REALLY appreciate all the help I have received.

(I'm sure I'll be back.)
