Body language is so much. I pay a lot of attention to body language, my own and that of other people.

My sister was raped when she was 20-something and had just moved to New York. These were the circumstances.

She went into her building on Second Avenue and 8th Street carrying some parcels. As she opened her mailbox, a man entered the building and surveyed the mailboxes as though looking for a particular name.

The man was black, and my sister knew everyone in her building, and none of them were black.

She started to walk the four floors up to her apartment, then stopped, feeling nervous.

She immediately felt ashamed of this feeling-- which was the prickles- on- the- back- of- the- neck limbic survival instinct kicking in, no doubt. So she continued on up the stairs.

She entered her apartment, quickly dropped the parcels on the table near the door, and turned to lock the door behind her.

It was too late.

It really did change her life.

I am paranoically careful.

You be careful, too!
