"Unlikely but I suppose it could happen." ((transition directly to UMTS))

Why? Hypnotized by vendors? <g> A morbid curiosity to see just how far GPRS will be postponed? <g> An urge to save spectrum and capacity improvements for a ranier day? <g> Pleasure in pissing spectrum payments into a black hole? <g> Heaving markets for hand warmers in Europe? <g>

"Yes. There ((QCOM's)) mastery of the GSM protocol stack is legend."

I think they'll buy it. Or Spinco will "partner" for it with the float past slated for the IPO.

"...and only QUALCOMM can make a CDMA chipset..."

It appears so - at least in a timely fashion. But I wouldn't want to underestimate the formidable talent presently speeding GPRS handsets to market! <g>

If you wish - you may file this with my 1x speed guesstimate: SpinCo will be first to market with commercial quantities of UMTS/GSM chipsets. The third mode - GPRS - may never be necessary.
----------

"Hope your right about the downlink. Wasn't uplink supposed to be same speed?"

I never said Q was perfect. <g>

"It's like the commodity chipsets that go inside, eh?"

Depends on who can make them...and make them well, with features that provide Operators maximum prospects for value added services.

"Good Super Bowl Sunday to you."

Football bores me to distraction. I'll probably be skimming Asia news sites for Monday morning news... <g>

best, ben
