Frank,

Maybe he should have tried vetoing the budget. A certain recent president certainly wasn't shy about doing that even when it shut down the government.

I think it would be useful to remind ourselves that the recent president who shut down the government did it in order to spend MORE not less. But the point is well taken, that the president has the power to veto budgets, and has no right to complain about what's in the budget if he didn't exercise his right to veto it.

Joe

Dear Frank:

The problem was always in that part that is not subject to veto, Social Security and Medicare(aid). These programs were not built as a true 401k type like it was sold to the public as but were pay as you go. Do you have any relatives alive in the 80's that were collecting SS and MC? Would you have paid to support them while the fight was on? BTW, Frank, Congress can always override a veto on any part of the budget. And they force the executive branch to spend all the money appropriated for the purposes budgeted. Remember what Nixon did to curb spending? Reagan was not allowed to simply not spend it (like us who are fiscally responsible). So 90% or more of the blame rests with the Congress.

BTW, it has been general policy that quality, highly trained and equipped troops can defeat much larger poorly trained or equipped (or both) troops in the US Military for decades. Yet many Democrats (there are Democratic Hawks who will do what is necessary) think that we overspend on R&D. Yet, time and time again, having a technological edge prevents many problems (all the complaining over shadows this fact). Preventing a problem seldom gets any attention. Desert Storm showed that the best way to defeat an enemy is by using the methods they want to get there (its their posteriors on the line). All the bitching covers up the fact that we have the best military in the world.

Pete
