. When truck driver Reginald Perry was pulled from his truck because he came into an intersection controlled by rioting youth, all the good words in the world didn't or wouldn't save him from being savagely beaten. He was a symbol and no longer had person status.

I can fully appreciate your Reginald Perry point. The day that Martin Luther King died, I had been shopping in Newark. As I was driving home down Springfield Avenue, a not very nice area, I could see the mood on the street was different than the usual people hanging around on street corners. There was a strange and ominous buzz. The radio in my car was not working so I didn't know what was going on. I just knew something was.

It was not until I was home that I found out what had happened. I also found out that a woman much like me had been killed by a sniper as she drove home from shopping along that same street. I'm sure I don't need to tell you that the event made an impression on me.

I remember focusing on undifferentiated hatred. I can understand, although I don't condone, someone hating George Wallace enough to hurt him, for example, but why hurt me...unless someone is so militant to think that all whites are evil. Relatively speaking, at least, I was one of the good guys. I'll never forget that experience and my reaction to it.

Cosmic, I appreciate your commenting on this subject. I shall ponder what everyone is saying.

I have a favorite saying that plays a big role in my thinking: If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. I don't ever want to be part of the problem.

Karen

comicfarce - if anybody tries to violate you, forget about Kung Fu attacks to the groin or knees unless you know what you are doing, it won't work. Guns and knives often are used against you. Put all your fear, anger and adrenalin into one punch to the throat. A forward or backward elbow jab if you are close enough will also work.

The best exercises for defending yourself is Qi Gung.

Mace works but a big can of bear spray is better.
