MEDIA MARKETING MARRIAGE WORLD'S BIGGEST DEAL
America Online one of the world's largest Internet companies merged with the media group Time Warner this month to create a business worth an estimated $350billion (£220 billion). The deal, if approved, ranks as the largest takeover ever and creates the world's 4th largest corporation. The merger brings together AOL, which provides Internet access to over 20m people world-wide, with the company that owns the CNN TV news channel, the Warner Bros film studios, Time magazine & Warner Music. America Online's mission is to make the Internet as central to people's lives as the telephone and television, and by joining forces with Time Warner they aim to fundamentally change the way people get information, communicate with others, buy products and are entertained. It is the unique positioning that AOL has built up as a family-orientated service provider that fostered close relationships with customers and its assets in its customer database, which made it a suitable match for Time Warner.

The press isolated some of the benefits:
1. AOL will benefit from Time Warner's cable distribution capabilities, with music, film, publishing and news content.
2. Time Warner will have access to AOL's 20 million registered homes.
3. Time Warner's cable television network will allow AOL to offer access to the Internet much more quickly, so that its American subscribers will be able to download whole albums of music, or even entire Hollywood films, in just a few minutes.
4. The merger will also enable the Internet to transform the way films, music and magazines are sold. AOL Time Warner also promises to offer advertisers new opportunities to integrate campaigns across global media as well as allowing media buyers to be more creative. TV, Internet, books and CD-ROM'S could all be accessed as part of an ad deal.
The spotlight is now on Yahoo! an Internet portal with the clout to do a similar deal. Analysts suggested potential partners could include diversified media groups such as Viacom, Disney or the News Corporation. Large-scale mergers between Internet groups and traditional content providers could turn out to be largely an American phenomenon, as the European media scene remains fragmented due to language and cultural differences.
