I imagine the street has undergone several zoning changes since I was there. The house was very close to Trinity College in Hartford. All that separated us was the house next door and Broad St. The area went into decline for a few years after I left, but I've heard that Trinity has bought several houses on that street recently, so I'm curious to see how things look there now.

We own a house in a little town (but growing fast) about 20 miles west of Hartford. Anyone who extols the virtues of small town government has not dealt with the Planning and Zoning Commission of that town. They are self appointed Napoleons. We built a barn out back with a finished 2nd floor with the idea of opening a used book store. We eventually did open it, but not after jumping through numerous hoops for them. There shouldn't have been any problems, as the house is located in the Central Business Zone.

We've been renting it out the past few years, recently we've been talking of either selling or doing work on the place to make it into 3 separate dwellings. We're thinking of installing plumbing in the barn and dividing the house. The town could use an arrangement like that, as there is a dearth of rentals. Our renters have tended to be people who are building somewhere in town and need a place to stay until their house is completed. There are no places in that town for people on fixed incomes to live, so I think we would be providing a service, but I know the P&Z Commission won't see it that way. It's a shame when older folks who have lived in a town all their lives have to leave when they can no longer afford the property taxes. Affluent towns need to have a place where retirees can stay. So far those kinds of proposals have been met with the "not in my backyard" attitude.
