I faced a fine one time because I was ordered by the Building Inspector to pull a "Demolition Permit" to demolish a delapidated building that had been built 30 years before, without a building permit, on a property I had just purchased. I tried to get the permit, but it was refused because they had no record of the structure's existence.

I kid you not.

What I did was totally demolish the building on a Sunday. On Monday morning, no building, no concrete pad...nothing but a nice flat area with some new sod laid in.

The Building Inspector never even mentioned it after that.
