Is Bill Gates at heart a ruthless, predatory businessman, enemy number one of the US trustbusters? Or is he really just a geek?

After hearing the Microsoft founder waxing lyrical on two subjects, his guests at a weekend lunch in Davos left feeling the latter might be the final judgment.

First, he explained how Microsoft had done a deal with Starbucks to connect every customer entering the shop to the internet as they sipped their coffee - a kind of substitute for unfolding the newspaper.

Gates did not go much into the details but he did point out that it would allow you, for example, to start an online chat with someone else in the shop. It seems that "Can I buy you a coffee?" is too difficult for some people to say.

But he became really enthused when asked if he missed being chief executive. No, he replied, he was very happy. The most fun thing he had done in the past three years was to spend time on a 30-page memo he wrote on XML, the software-driven future internet language.

Now that is a subject best left to the written word.
