Thanks - I've also wondered about the other factors you cite, (except for the brokerage IRAs, though that must be important also.)

The market volatility you cite is worth noting since I see a lot of would-be contrarians on SI who talk like they'd love to see a killer "bear market" to teach everyone who has dared make money by being long the past 10 years a lesson - but nobody really wants such a thing since no one makes any real money in equities in such a situation, neither long nor short. I wasn't investing in the early 70's, I'd just started working and was busy learning on the job but remember the high interest rates etc. and don't relish revisiting those days.

Also correct me if I'm wrong but I believe you do have to beware of wash sale rules in a tax deferred account if you sell at a loss in a taxable account - you can't buy back in your brokerage IRA as an end run can you? But otherwise such an account is really great.
