"That's about $350 savings on the PIII system."

Which is not justified unless Intel is pumping some major price support or Gateway is doing a PIII blowout because they are dumping the line. Even if Intel was supplying the processors and chipset free, it doesn't justify that kind of price differential. Well, ok, it might...

5dave22:

Well if you won't buy into that explanation, then perhaps, you'll accept this: GTW wants to unload its "deadmeat" P3 inventory, the only way it can...scorched earth pricing...

Dave,

RE: Gateway's 1 gig athlon vs. piii

NG, hard to spin this one. MAYBE 25% of people out there would choose the Athlon. Probably MUCH less. If I remember correctly, PIII and Athlon 1Gigs are on par with each other (Thunderbird).

Save $100, get more RAM - and CD-RW. That's about $350 savings on the PIII system.

I think the spin is in my earlier post in response to Jim's reaction of integrated video:

Especially when you consider that Gateway is marketing the Athlon systems as "gamer's dream" or whatever. Yes, an integrated system doesn't "perform" as well (i.e. the PIII is in the performance series), but if you don't need video performance, they probably perform fine.

FWIW,

JJ

EDIT: And maybe the pentium purchasers are avoiding PIII systems because they don't want to experience P-NEXT ENVY immediately after their purchase.

EDIT AGAIN: Hence, a much lower price is required on the whole PIII cellar-ized line.
