The largest unionized segment of our economy is the government. A government worker is almost twice as likely to belong to a union as a worker in private industry. Most growth in union membership in recent years has been confined to public sector employees. Why are these people unionized? Do they need protection from an employer who does not have their interests at heart (that employer being the people)?

In case anybody doesn't know much about the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, here's a link. There are, on the left, are links to the headlines of the day, photographs, oral histories, and management attitudes toward worker safety in 1911.

...The Times also found Mr. H.F.J. Porter, who had
written to Triangle for an appointment on the matter of
fire drills.

"There are only two or three factories in the city where
fire drills are in use," he declared ruefully. "In some of
them where I have installed the system myself, the
owners have discontinued it.

"The neglect of factory owners in the matter of safety
of their employees is absolutely criminal. One man
whom I advised to install a fire drill replied to me: 'Let
'em burn. They're a lot of cattle, anyway.' "
