Alcatel OmniPCX 4400 Hailed as Best PBX for Teleconnect Product of
the Year 2000

Alcatel IP-based voice communication system celebrates anniversary in North America with
coveted industry award

Calabasas, Calif., Jan. 29, 2001 - Alcatel (NYSE: ALA) announced today that Teleconnect
Magazine, a leading telecom industry publication, has chosen the Alcatel OmniPCX 4400 as
Product of the Year 2000 in the Best PBX category.

The Alcatel OmniPCX 4400 was selected over other nominees because of the product's
rich features and IP functionality. A key differentiator was the product's ability to provide a
smooth migration path from legacy to IP telephony. From IP plugware that enables digital
handsets to support IP calls to monitoring technology that switches VoIP calls to a
circuit-switched network when packet loss or delay is detected, the Alcatel OmniPCX 4400
allows users to build a future-proof voice network and migrate to IP at their own pace.

Editors of Teleconnect Magazine distinguished winners as the most practical, most useful
products and services for voice and fax that can be used by businesses today. The criteria
includes overall design and functionality as compared to its peer group, as well as its
relative ease of installation and use by the user.

"Of all the PBX/communication servers that the Teleconnect's editors have reviewed, we
selected the Alcatel's OmniPCX 4400 because it has proven to be exceptional," said Warren
Hersch, Teleconnect's industry editor. "The Alcatel OmniPCX 4400 is an open-architecture
PBX that runs on UNIX and is scalable from 50 to 50,000 users. It transports IP and non-IP
calls including ISDN, frame relay, PSTN, ATM, and leased line, but what really sold us were
the practical features such as one-number/follow-me service, unified messaging, plus the
ability to integrate many applications using standard interfaces such as TAPI, CSTA, LDAP
or SNMP."

"Alcatel is pleased that the OmniPCX 4400 has been selected as the best voice
communication system by Teleconnect Magazine," said Patrick Liot, president of Alcatel's
e-Business Networking Division. "Since the launch of the Alcatel OmniPCX 4400 in January
2000, Alcatel's voice/data convergence strategy has taken root in North America. Winning
industry awards such as Teleconnect's Product of the Year 2000 reaffirms that Alcatel's
strengths in voice and data will be key to the company's continued success in the
enterprise market."

The award-winning Alcatel OmniPCX 4400 is the world's most advanced IP-based voice
communication system. Based on a client/server UNIX architecture, the Alcatel OmniPCX
4400 includes scalability from 50 to 50,000 users, innovative Reflexes telephone handsets,
99.999% reliability, one-number mobility, unified messaging, voice-over-IP networking with
quality of service management, Web-based customer contact center, and comprehensive
network management.
