stribe, Gateway is overcharging for the Athlon system pure and simple. Here's the parts cost for the 1 GHz Athlon system:
Case, KB, mouse, speakers, floppy: $80
Motherboard: $90
64M: $25
Athlon 1 GHz: $200
CDROM: $30
Hard Disk: $90
TNT2 Video: $50
17" monitor: $130

TOTAL: $695
SALES PRICE: $1,299

Those are all retail prices, Gateway could probably make a decent profit selling that system for $850 and a typical profit selling for $999.

I just looked through my ComputorEdge. There are20 places selling both 1 GHz Athlon and PIII systems. Many of the Intel systems use cheap integrated video boards in every case the Athlon system is CHEAPER, not more expensive. The price difference ranges from $90 to $350. With a CDRW the Intel would be $190 to $450 more expensive.

Gateway must have made a conscious decision to sell fewer Athlon sytems, and that is bad for AMD and bad for Gateway.
