I guess you know that that invisible/imaginary friend reference is simply intended to make the point that the entity cited as the authority for some political positions (I'm thinking of the one that says women of contrary belief shouldn't be allowed a prescription for RU486) isn't credible or authoritative to many of us. Us citizens.
I think the Christian God, Yahwey, is no more an "imaginary" friend to those that revere Him than were, to their followers, Gaea, Uranus, Cronus, Rhea, Oceanus, Tethys, Hyperion, Mnemosyne, Themis, Iapetus, Coeus, Crius, Phoebe, Thea, Prometheus, Epimetheus, Atlas, Metis, Dione, Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Hera, Ares, Athena, Apollo, Aphrodite, Hermes, Artemis, Hephaestus, Asclepius, Demeter, Persephone, Dionysus, Eros, Hebe, Eris, Helius, Thanatos, Pan, Nemesis, The Graces, The Muses, The Erinyes or The Fates, for example.
(That's not even the tip of the God iceberg. Just a few ancient ones.)
Yahweh believers, who are at present the majority in this country, think the default position for everyone should be their interpretation of the supposed literal word of Yahweh.
It's an old story.
