Millicom Wins First Venezuelan Wires Local Loop Telecom License

Caracas, Jan. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Millicom International Cellular SA, a global telecommunications company, won
its first wireless local loop license in Venezuela's ongoing auction of telecommunications awards.

Millicom won its license for the western state part of the country, including the oil rich state of Zulia, paying
$800,000.

The license will give Millicom the platform on which to challenge national phone company CA Nacional Telefonos
de Venezuela, which lost its monopoly on domestic service Nov. 27.

The license will allow Millicom to quickly provide basic telephone, data or video services by using radio signals
instead of wire networks.

Venezuela is auctioning a total of 15 licenses, three in each of the country's five regions as part of the opening. Two
licenses are still to be awarded.

Luxembourg-based Millicom develops and operates cellular telephone systems worldwide. The company has
interests in 33 cellular systems in 20 countries, primarily in emerging markets in Asia, Latin America, Europe, and
Africa.
