Microsoft owned Expedia.com did not have to follow the market wims of "first mover advantage" and "land grab" which were demanded from many other dot.coms, whether they wanted or not. Alomex, Many of us did not give much credence to the first mover advantage. First mover may have been a help to Yahoo and Ebay. I am not sure I can tell. However, both did a good job as doing what they do. The other first movers were the first to fold due to burning all their cash.
