To: George Coyne who wrote (124316 ) 1/30/2001 12:04:31 AM From: mst2000 Respond to of 769670 I'm not sure who said what about what -- all I did was link the article. But what I do know -- with absolute certainty -- is that when the Miami Herald completes its review of all Florida undervotes and overvotes, we'll know exactly what the ballots showed in the Florida election. The accounting firm perform this audit of ballots for the Herald will simply report what each ballot shows - if an overvote, it will reflect how many were Gore +1, Bush +1, Buchanon + 1, Nader + 1, etc.; and if the overvote was a write in plus a vote for the write-in candidate that will show too (as I recall, there several hundred of those (net) in Gore's favor in at least one optical scanner county which is heavily GOP). If it is an undervote, the auditing firm will how many ballots had which physical markings - a mere dimple, a pattern of dimples, a one corner perforation with light showing through, a two corner perforation, a two corner swinging chad, a three corner hanging chad, or nothing. It will tabulate exact numbers on all ballots for candidates for all 67 counties and there will be no BS interchange between the left and the right about "how many" looked like X, and "how many" looked like Y. Whatever give and take there will be will be interpreting the physical data -- whether these were legitimate votes or not -- at least one question will be answered without a dispute: What do the ballots show? It was the question the Bush forces were so scared of that they did everything they could to suppress it, and then to run the clock out on it. With the help of the Supreme Court, they prevailed, to be sure. It truly doesn't matter how long the Herald takes to figure this out and report the accurate data. Bush is our President, by 5-4 vote, regardless of what the results of this "second look" tell us -- the GOP ground war in Florida made certain of that, and Dubya is not about to resign if the data shows that he would have lost in a statewide manual recount, or that he would have gotten got his ass kicked in Florida were it not for a total fluke so bizarre and of such a magnitude that it does start to make you wonder how much of it was an accident and how much of it was by design. So I'm in no hurry. I'll just cash my tax cut, and let justice take its course. It's not like I have a choice. But when justice is denied by the Courts, the people eventually take it back. The vengeance for this ugly political strongarm is coming in 2 years and in 4 years. Until them, we have no choice but to wait and see, to support what we agree with and oppose what we disagree with. Time will tell if Dubya has the capacity to do this job well, or is just another right wing ideological half-wit with a religious streak. Indeed, 1 week down, 207 to go. MST
