IBM had a bunch of quotes and nicknames associated with them back then, like:

Constipated elephant

Not invented here (NIH)

Here, customer, is what we developed, and it's what you need!

That's not a bug, it's a feature!

The customer's problem is the customer's problem.

I don't hear anything of the sort about Cisco.

IBM had a broader scope of products and could provide complete solutions.

That's only lately. Back then they were strictly a company with a bunch of different products, and not known for solutions.

Anyone that knows these companies would in no way compare them, especially the upper management of the two. IBM had to go to the outside to find Akers' replacement (Gerstner). Some of the bashers here post like they think all companies are equal WRT people, style, etc. I suspect most of them have never set foot inside of a technology company.
