The problem with the abortion debate, IMO, is that it is so unbelievably polarized. You're right, none of the pro-choice groups would ever admit (I don't think, anyway) that they would have a different analysis if they viewed life as beginning at conception. At the same time, though, you would never hear from the pro-lifers that they would have a different analysis if they viewed human life as being a gradual, developing process rather than something that happened at the very instant of conception. Both sides demonize the others (our friend Johannes even believes that doctors who perform abortions--a presently legal procedure--should be executed, or so he says). As long as both sides refuse to acknowledge the good intentions of the other side, I have little hope for any resolution.... ----------------------------------------------------If I may chirp in here. Your following point is an interesting one. "i guess if i viewed, as you do, that abortion were truly murder, i suspect i'd have a much different position"I am sure most pro-choicers do not subscribe to that line of thought, but it seems odd that they would think someone who does have this point of view is warped. That's the impression I get, anyway (not from your post). I don't call my self a pro-choice (I think it is a stupid term), but I do think abortions should be legal. That said, I can easily see why people would feel they are murders. When life begins is a tricky question and I don't know that answer, but it could easily be argued that it starts at conception or shortly thereafter. When I did a little research on pregnancy I was amazed at how fast the little guys/gals grow. Saw a heartbeat at 6 weeks. I had no idea they developed so fast in the initial stages. The long and the short of it is that your example is worth considering, and is not an outlandish position for someone to have. Doesn't seem like many pro-choice groups even acknowledge it as worthy point of consideration.
