OT - Earthquake Info

The ITN news tonight had film from the District Headquarters, Bhuj, that showed the entire town of 65,000 completely destroyed - every building down or damaged beyond repair. An Army officer in charge of a small rescue team was choking back tears while he explained that probably over 3/4 of the population had perished. He stated that in Bhuj and the surrounding towns there is no civil authority because practically everyone in the government has died.

On one street over 400 schoolchildren and their teachers had been preparing to participate in an Independence Day parade. Practically all of the children perished when the multistory buildings for 300 meters on either side of the street collapsed onto the street below. Rescuers have pulled just 35 survivors from the rubble.

There are small funeral pyres all over town were families and rescuers are cremating the dead.

The 100,000 predictions sound ominously correct.

From CNN:
"As far as devastation is concerned, it is absolutely extensive," Jaitley said. "Village after village has been razed to the ground. There are several towns which have been absolutely made non-existent."
