<<Did those groups also run tests to detect for the presence of HSV in the brain tissue?>>

Not that I am aware.

Taking about HSV in brain tissue, I remember a case many years ago of a 60 yrs.old man who had an episode of herpetic encephalitis. He was in a coma with respiratory assistance for 3 weeks. The neurologists following him because he had "decerebrate reflexes" felt it was a hopeless case. After 3 weeks he came out of the coma and presented no apparent sequelae for the 2 or 3 years that I was able to follow him. I haven't check the literature fo any report on similar cases.
