I do not care to meddle in people's morality- but I DO care to influence it. For example criminal morality- I would like to see less of it. While people (imo) have every "right" to be criminals and pay the cost- I would like to influence them not to be. And so I would set up programs aimed at the things I believe foster crime, in order to eliminate those things. "Liking" the people or caring about them personally has nothing to do with it- but I do care about their behavior.

Another example, religion. Everyone in this country has a right to worship or not worship whatever they want- but in the interest of our national peace I think it is a very bad idea to have the government involved in religion. It is not something that generally brings different people together, instead it puts people at each others throats. Government (imo) should target those things that make society whole and that make society fair (or at least make society appear fair- since I don't actually believe in real fairness).
