Boycotting Chinese goods, in my opinion, is not likely to improve the conditions of Chinese workers and may make them worse. That opinion, however, is certainly arguable because Chinese workers present a more complex dynamic than minks.

did you know what the Chinese were going to do if the so called embargo was going to be imposed on them back in ...hmmm 1996 ? (i cannot remember the exact year)

a guy that worked at one of the Chinese conglomerates, (owned by the Chinese government), told me...

look, we can move production to one of the Mexican "maquiladoras", (that the Chinese owned, or can contract with), anywhere along the us/mex border. we will do the finish work there, and legally, we can label it "Made in Mexico" therefore, it would enter the US under the NAFTA agreement.

this example, happened to be in reference to garment production. (but they were in all kinds of business).

he said... "embargo ? we no care about no stinking embargo"

I wasn't talking about "Chinese labor," though.

Your remark seemed to imply that while it was a good thing to avoid fur, it was foolish to avoid slave labor.

I neither wear fur nor, if I can goddam help it, wear things made by slaves who are starved, raped, and tortured.

Nothing to do with factories of Chinese workers who have paying jobs, albeit pathetically paying ones by our standards, (child workers and their wages are especially pathetic, and I know the arguments on both sides of this issue and have expressly not engaged it).

Slaves aren't paid.
