The same, however, could be argued for 1x overlays on GSM networks.

Would 1x overlays of GSM have a substantially higher cost?

Obviously not an issue in Euro-land but could be elsewhere.

Benny, that is not quite correct. WCDMA will be using GPRS core so it is a necessary component. Of course the operator could choose not to implement GPRS on the radio side but that would be silly.

For our readers from Alabama, it would be like a pick-up with no bed nor gun rack. A woman without a cat (let´s see if I get away with this one).

EDGE on the other hand is only a cheap and cheerful modulation exercise in the air interface. Its like you swopped the jap in-line four to a V-12.

And how´s our friend CDMA2000 1X in comparison? Looks pretty dated in this comparison test.

Its got the same nip four but requires starting by hand with a crank. Its not a modern always-on solution but requires each time setting of the connection manually.
