A while back some right-wing hack at Barron's also wrote an opinion piece slicing and dicing unions in every way possible for the woes at a particular company. I sent this stooge for big business an e-mail asking him whether he ever investigated the possibility that bad management, and not unions, caused the company's bottom line to head south. (Novel thought, isn't it? Blaming management.) I also made the point that unions don't exist in vacuums, that usually some action by management (i.e., making people work 80-hour weeks in unsafe conditions) triggers union organizing drives.

A couple days later the bigshot writer for Barron's responds to me e-mail. He says, "Yeah, you may be right. Every company probably has the union it deserves."

I laughed long and hard.
