Most drug development costs are trivial compared to drug marketing costs, though the drug companies do their very best to keep that little secret to themselves. Most medical research is not funded by drug companies, either.

Tim,

The Government supports the pharmaceutical companies dirty dealings through FDA regulation. Natural medicines are not patentable, so the FDA makes them illegal until the drug companies find a way to patent it.

A good example is GHB. It used to be a cheap over the counter diet supplement until it's usefulness as a sleeping aid was discovered. The government then banned it as a date rape drug, and now it is sold by a pharmaceutical company at 1000% margins.
