The only reason why oil from other countries is "still relatively cheap" is because it is still profitable for countries without onerous environmental regulations to drill.

Uh huh. You wouldn't happen to have any idea of the relative costs of producing oil in Saudi Arabia versus on the North Slope of Alaska or in the North Sea, would you? And you think that has something to to with "onerous environmental regulations"? I smell a W political line coming, like ANWR drilling is going to fix California's electrical power production problems or something. What specific 'onerous environmental regulations" do you think raise the cost of offshore oil production, as compared to the basic problem of drilling in deep water versus drilling on dry land?

Like James Watt said, there are two kinds of people, "environmental extremists" and "real Americans", right? I hear W's got a Watt protege on tap for Interior.

Of course. Immorality is expedient. I do lots of things I consider immoral. I buy overpackaged foods when I am in a hurry- that is immoral (in my eyes). Our family consumes much more than it's "fair" share, that is immoral (in my eyes). I drive a big van that guzzles gas- more immorality. It is immoral (in my relative opinion ) yet expedient to buy oil from over seas- in this case it also immorally protects our environment at the cost of someone elses. It is a trade off- I prefer our environment, and our hoarding the oil, and that's that.
