Compaq VP Mark Lewis Says Storage Is Key to Success: Comment
By John Stebbins

Santa Barbara, California, Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Compaq Computer Corp.'s Mark Lewis, vice president of Enterprise Storage Group, spoke this morning to analysts and investors at Merrill Lynch & Co.'s Storage Technology Conference, which runs through Wednesday at the Bacara Resort & Spa in Santa Barbara, California.

Compaq, based in Houston, Texas, is the world's biggest personal computer maker. It also makes and develops large computer- data storage devices and software.

On importance of computer storage products:

``Storage is key to (Compaq's) success.''

``The Internet is driving the shift to a pervasive information era.''

``We are finding that the value of a company lies in two things: Its people. Its information.''

``We shipped more (storage capacity) last year than the number two and three companies combined.''

Company outlook:

``We believe we are poised for a good year. Even with the slowdown, we are seeing customers saying they can't afford not to invest now'' in storage.

``We think we will be the fastest growing storage software company when the number's are in this year.''

``We are seeing an acceleration in (storage) growth.''

``The problem is not about storage capacity. It will become free. The challenge is how you manage the information, keep it, protect it, or get rid of it.''

Compaq's storage products:

``Our storage product line today will be completely changed in 12 months. But will be fully compatible with existing products.''
