John, another thought on 'Other' and disclosure:

On average, corporate America does not understand the value that the market puts on full disclosure. The more a company discloses, the greater the value the market puts on that company's stock, everything else being equal. In addition, I think that corporate America vastly overestimates the competitive value of any information that it does disclose.

I have seen specific examples of oil and gas companies in the US valued at much higher cash flow multiples than a directly comparable company in Canada. By directly comparable, I mean that these companies had interest in the exact same oil fields. The only difference was that the US requires more extensive disclosure than Canada.

In direct regard to Intel, I would bet money that there is considerable value that Intel could unlock merely by having more extensive disclosure. Look at your own personal situation. You have concerns, a large portion of which are based upon an uncertainty. This uncertainty costs shareholders. On the flip side, it is hard to see much of a competitive edge that Intel would be giving up merely by telling us more specifically what the profitability is of more business groups. And note that this is Intel that we're talking about here; Intel is much better at its disclosure than a whole host of other companies. When you consider that, it comes to light how large the potential gain could be for the market overall if everyone just engaged in a little more open financial practices.
