For starters, in the case of Europe you could say GSM markets are more saturated than younger CDMA networks. The CDMA networks are actually quite a bit younger as they don´t exist.

How the larger installed base of customers (couple of hundred million vs. zippo) turns out to be a double negative to GSM phone manufacturers, well, that is an, er, challenging theory and would be very interesting to hear.
