BTW, when you said Akers' reign, what was his first name? I know of another Akers, so I'm curious if it's the same guy.

John Akers. The CEO of IBM prior to Lou Gerstner. By "Akers' reign" I was really referring to Ellen Hancock, an Akers' era executive who was in charge of IBM's networking division. The irony of Lou kicking her out is that she went on to be CEO of Exodus (EXDS) and thanks to her options, she's worth more than Lou!

FWIW, I believe it was Akers who said IBM would be a $100B in a few short years and expanded the company like nuts. Unfortunately, sales didn't grow with the workforce and Gerstner came in to clean up the mess left behind during the recession of the early 90's.
