Mephisto--Ashcroft was defeated because he was too extreme, for one thing, and also because of the wave of sympathy for the wife of the governor (Carnahan) who died in a plane crash during the campaign, and who agreed to take the seat if her deceased husband, whose name was still on the ballot, won.... I heard today, privately, that the vote will likely be 57-43, unless Breaux decides to vote against, and then it will be 56-44. All Daschle (realistically) wanted was to hit 40, and I now think that's a dead certainty.
