Many of the women who worked in the factories my grandmother worked in were German immigrants- so I bet they sang German songs. My great grandmother never did manage to master English- so I am sure she sang German songs, if she sang at all. She was a very hardworking woman (had to be) and rather dour- I can understand why. She remembered taking the laundry of the rich folk in Germany down to the river to wash in the spring. She didn't care much for the upper classes. I guess if you've got your arms in freezing water washing someone elses very very dirty knickers you could learn a bit about class hatred.
